Leipzig, August 18th, 2024

A tragic incident has occurred at the Highfield-Festival in Leipzig, Germany, as two gondolas on the festival's Riesenrad caught fire, leaving dozens injured.

The fire broke out on Saturday evening, August 17th, at around 10:45 pm while the festival was in full swing.

According to local authorities, the fire started in one of the gondolas and quickly spread to another, engulfing both in flames.

Dozens Injured, Including Children

Over 20 people, including several children, were injured in the incident.

Many suffered burns and smoke inhalation, while others sustained injuries from falling debris or while trying to escape.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Riesenrad was a Popular Festival Attraction

The Riesenrad, a 55-meter-tall Ferris wheel, was one of the main attractions at the Highfield-Festival.

It offered festivalgoers panoramic views of the festival grounds and the surrounding countryside.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Safety Measures Under Scrutiny

Authorities are now investigating the safety measures in place at the festival, including the maintenance and inspection of the Riesenrad.

Questions are being raised about whether proper safety protocols were followed and whether the ride was adequately inspected before it was opened to the public.

The Highfield-Festival has been suspended until further notice while authorities conduct their investigation.
